Roofers in WaiukuA river-port town next door to the steel mill.

Waiuku sits at the head of the Waiuku River, a tidal arm of the Manukau Harbour, a few minutes from the Glenbrook mill where NZ Steel paints COLORSTEEL. Being next to the mill doesn't make any product right for your house: that comes down to how close you are to salt water. And if your roof feeds a water tank, that changes what can go on it.

What makes Waiuku different

An early river port

Waiuku allotments went on sale in 1851 and the Kentish Hotel was built in 1851 or early 1852. Other survivors include the old jail (1865), Wesley Methodist Church (1883), Hartmann House (1886) and Pollock Cottage (1890).

A brick town centre

After a fire on 28 August 1916, the Town Board required buildings in the centre to be brick or masonry, which is why the main street looks the way it does.

Estuary and west coast

The town is on the isthmus of the Āwhitu Peninsula, about 12 km north of the Waikato River mouth, with the black-sand surf beach at Karioitahi close by. The region's highest recorded gust, 204 km/h, was at exposed Manukau Heads on the same west coast.

Wet winters

NIWA figures for 1991 to 2020 give Waiuku Forest 1,316.9 mm of rain a year, with August the wettest month at 163.4 mm.

The mill next door

The Glenbrook steel mill opened in 1968 and is a major local employer. NZ Steel says it runs an integrated mill there using local ironsand, and its paint line supports COLORSTEEL demand.

Which COLORSTEEL suits a Waiuku roof?

NZ Steel sets warranties by distance from salt water. Its Moderate category typically includes the immediate surroundings of calm salt water such as estuaries, while west coast homes 500 m to 1 km from the coast fall in Severe. Within 100 metres of salt water of any kind, NZ Steel wants to be contacted so it can confirm the warranty applies.

So a house on the river's tidal edge, or out towards Karioitahi, needs that check before ordering. In town, most of Franklin's homes are standalone houses (87.8% in 2023), so the choice is usually yours alone. See COLORSTEEL and re-roofing in Auckland.

If your roof feeds a water tank

BRANZ says a roof that collects drinking water must not be painted with lead or chromium-based paints, and shouldn't be used if it has uncoated lead flashings, treated timber or old asbestos-cement sheets. It recommends mesh leaf guards, a first-flush diverter, and checking spouting, guards and downpipes every 3 to 6 months.

Disconnect the tank before any moss treatment or roof wash, so chemicals don't end up in your water. See moss and lichen and roof flashings.

What we'd do in Waiuku

On a tank-water house, we'd tell the roofer before they quote, so the paint, flashings and spouting are all chosen for drinking water. Near the estuary, we'd want the COLORSTEEL category and warranty confirmed in writing. On a building from before 1900, check with Heritage New Zealand first. If we have a checked roofer covering Waiuku, we'll pass your job to them.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is COLORSTEEL made near Waiuku?
Yes. NZ Steel's mill at neighbouring Glenbrook makes steel from local ironsand, and its paint line there supports COLORSTEEL. Which product suits your house still depends on how close you are to salt water.
My house or shop in Waiuku is very old. Is there anything extra to check?
Heritage New Zealand says an archaeological authority is needed before work that may modify or destroy a pre-1900 structure, whether or not it's listed. Check with them and the council before major roof work.
