Nelson roofsPlenty of sun, and the odd enormous storm.
Nelson's roofs spend most of the year in sun, about 2,400 hours of it, among the highest totals in New Zealand. That's hard on paint. The other side of Nelson weather is the rare storm that drops months of rain in days, as August 2022 and December 2011 did. Tell us what you need and we'll find a Nelson roofer who specialises in that job, if we have one covering your area.

What Nelson's weather and ground mean for roofs
Sun and UV
NIWA says Nelson is frequently one of the four sunniest places in the country, and its 95 wet days a year are the fewest of the Nelson and Tasman stations. UV runs higher than in the far south. Sun breaks paint down, so fading and chalking are the things to watch; see roof painting in Nelson.
Storms that break records
The atmospheric river of 16 to 20 August 2022 brought a 1-in-120 year rain event, and the Maitai River peaked at 459 cumecs, nearly double its previous record. In December 2011, 160 Nelson houses were evacuated for flooding or slips after more than six times the usual December rain. Spouting, valleys and flashings all get tested at once in rain like that.
Slips and moving ground
More than 200 landslides struck the region in the December 2011 storm. Parts of Tāhunanui are built on a large, active landslide, the subject of a 2002 study. Natural Hazards Commission cover applies to both house and land after a landslide, while storm and flood damage to the house itself goes to your private insurer.
Brick chimneys and the 1929 quake
The Murchison earthquake of 17 June 1929 (Mw 7.3) damaged many brick buildings and chimneys in Nelson. If your older house still has a brick chimney, especially a cracked or unused one, a roofer's opinion is worth having. Our chimneys and earthquakes guide explains when removal makes sense.
Salt around the bay
Homes within 500 m of Tasman Bay or Nelson Haven, or 100 m of a tidal estuary, are in exposure Zone D, and breaking-surf beachfronts such as parts of Tāhunanui can be Zone E under E2/AS1. That decides which steel, fixings and spouting suit your house, so get the roofer to confirm the zone.
Winter frosts
Nelson averages 31 days a year below 0 °C, with about 21 ground frosts in July, though snow is very rare. Frosty mornings make roofs treacherous and push winter roof work later into the day.

Heritage streets and building consent
Nelson has kept many Victorian buildings in its historic centre, and the South Street area is designated as having heritage value. If you're in a heritage area, ask Nelson City Council about any limits before changing roofing materials or colours. Heritage New Zealand also says works that may modify or destroy a pre-1900 structure need an archaeological authority.
Nelson City Council issues building consents in the city; Richmond and the rest of Tasman District deal with Tasman District Council. Like-for-like roofing with a comparable product in the same position is usually consent-exempt, but changing the roofing type can need consent. Consented roofing work on a house must be done or supervised by an LBP.
Storm and slip safety
If a slip has moved above or below your house, or cracks are opening in the ground, keep out of that area and follow Civil Defence advice. Never go up on the roof in a storm or while it's wet. Where water is dripping close to a light fitting, switch off at the switchboard, and stay out from under any ceiling that's bulging.
Our advice for Nelson homeowners
We'd plan roof painting for Nelson's long dry summer rather than wait until the paint is chalking off. Before winter, we'd have spouting and valleys checked so they're clear when the next big rain arrives. And if there's an old brick chimney you don't use, we'd get a roofer's view on removing it rather than re-flashing it again.
