Roof painting in TaurangaThe sun is your paint's toughest critic here.

Roof painting in Tauranga is mostly about protecting longrun, decramastic and concrete tile from strong sun and, near the coast, salt. On a sound roof a good repaint is money well spent; on one that's rusting through it only hides the problem for a while. Tell us about your roof and we'll look for a Tauranga roofer or painter whose speciality is roof painting, where we have one.

Why Tauranga is hard on roof paint

More sunshine than the north's norm

BRANZ, citing NIWA, puts Tauranga above 2,200 sunshine hours a year, where about 2,000 is typical of northern New Zealand. NIWA's example UV forecast for the city shows summer UV at sun-protection levels from 9 am to 5.30 pm. Fading and chalking follow, so ask how well a coating resists UV as well as what colour it comes in.

November is the driest month

At the airport, November averages 74 mm of rain and July 129 mm. A coating needs a dry run to cure, so late spring and summer are the natural painting season, and a winter job will lose days to rain.

Dew and ground frost slow the mornings

There are 54.6 ground frosts a year at the airport, so on still winter mornings the roof can be wet with dew or frost well after sunrise. A painter who starts too early traps moisture under the paint. Ask how they plan the day around it.

Salt has to come off first

Near the harbour or the surf, salt builds up on the roof, and most of all in sheltered spots that rain rarely washes. Paint over salt doesn't hold well, so the prep should include a thorough wash and treating any rust before primer goes on.

Paint it, or is it past painting?

Faded, chalky or lightly weathered roofing is a good candidate. Surface rust that brushes back to sound steel can be treated and painted. Rust holes, sheets that flex underfoot, or tiles cracking all over mean paint is only cosmetic, and our guide on whether to repaint or re-roof helps you decide.

Different roofs need different systems: see painting an iron roof, painting a tile roof and painting a decramastic roof. If the roof might be asbestos cement, read is my roof asbestos? before anyone cleans it.

Don't count on insurance to repaint a tired roof. The Insurance Council says paint faded or peeled by age or weather isn't sudden damage, so it isn't covered.

A repaint is maintenance under Schedule 1, so it doesn't usually need a building consent or an LBP. It's still multi-day work at height: WorkSafe treats roof painting that runs over some days as long-duration work, where scaffolding or edge protection should be considered.

The amount of prep is what changes the job most: how much rust needs treating, how many screws and laps need fixing first, and how many coats go on. Roof area, pitch and access matter too. Make sure each of those is spelled out in the written quote rather than left as a verbal promise.

What to ask a Tauranga roof painter

  • What prep is included: wash, salt removal, rust treatment and primer on bare spots?
  • Which coating system is it, how many coats, and is it made for high UV and coastal exposure?
  • Is there a written warranty from the paint maker, and does it apply this close to the sea?
  • Will you use scaffolding or edge protection, given it's a job over several days?
  • What happens if rain or a heavy dew arrives part way through?
  • Do you replace rusted screws and fix loose laps before painting?

Before you book a repaint

We'd only paint a roof that's sound under the faded colour, and we'd get rusty fixings and lifted laps fixed first, so the new coat isn't sealing in a problem. Book it for late spring or summer, when the airport's records show the driest weather. And keep the warranty paperwork with the house file, because a buyer will ask.

Questions

Straight answers.

How long will a roof repaint last in Tauranga?
It depends on the product, the prep and your exposure. As a floor, Building Code clause B2 expects renewable protective coatings to last at least 5 years. A good system usually aims well past that, so compare written warranties.
Do I need a building consent to paint my roof?
Usually not. Repainting is maintenance, which Schedule 1 of the Building Act exempts. It still has to be done safely, with fall protection.
Can a decramastic roof be painted?
Yes, if the tiles are sound. It needs gentle, low-pressure cleaning first, and loose chips and rusty tiles dealt with. See our page on painting a decramastic roof.
