What does SandScape look like?
NZ Steel describes a pale coastal grey that pairs easily with white, washed timber and other natural finishes: think weathered cedar and white joinery behind the dunes.
With an LRV of 66%, it looks light and bright in strong sun. Classic is the one finish it's sold in.
Which product for a SandScape roof by the sea?
| MAXAM roofing | ALTIMATE roofing | |
|---|---|---|
| Mild: 5 km or more from either coast | 50 years | 50 years |
| Moderate: 500 m to 5 km east, 1 to 5 km west | 40 years | 40 years |
| Severe: 100 to 500 m east, 500 m to 1 km west | 30 years | 30 years |
| Very Severe: 25 to 100 m east, 50 to 500 m west | 20 years | 30 years |
| Extremely Severe: 0 to 25 m east, 0 to 50 m west of the high-water line | Not recommended | 25 years |
How to read that table
The years are NZ Steel's roofing warranty against perforation from corrosion. The bands are COLORSTEEL's own environmental categories, not the NZS 3604 exposure zones a designer works with, so don't treat one as the other.
NZ Steel calls its chart a guide only: prevailing wind and the building's position can push a site into a harsher band. Paint warranties shorten too, from 18 years in Mild and Moderate to 15 beyond. Within 100 metres of salt water, NZ Steel asks you to contact COLORSTEEL to confirm cover.
Geothermal ground is a separate risk: have the roofer check with NZ Steel.
What we'd do at the beach
We'd settle the product before the colour. Get the roofer to measure the distance to the high-water line and tell you, in writing, which category applies. Then look at a SandScape sample on site, in the glare it'll live in, because screens won't show it truly. We aren't affiliated with NZ Steel, so take final warranty wording from its own documents.
Want a roofer to take a look?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match it with a Find My Roofer certified roofer who specialises in that kind of work, and they call you to quote. Your number goes to them alone.
