Who can do roofing work in New Zealand?
It depends on the job. Restricted building work, which includes roofing on a home that needs a building consent, must be done or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner licensed for it. Repairs and maintenance with comparable products usually don't need a consent, so most painting, cleaning and small repairs aren't restricted building work and don't legally need an LBP.
Restricted roofing work can be done or supervised by an LBP with a Roofing licence, which has 7 areas of practice from concrete or clay tile through to membrane roofs. The law also treats registered plumbers and gasfitters as holding a Roofing licence. And a Carpentry LBP can install lightweight profiled metal roofing.
What will I know about my roofer?
When we pass on your job, you'll get the roofer's business name and, where your job is restricted building work, their LBP number. You can then look them up on the public LBP register yourself, which shows their licence class, their licence history and any discipline in the last three years. Our guide to checking an LBP walks you through it.
What if there's no roofer near me yet?
We'll tell you straight away. You can also search the LBP register by town or city and filter by the Roofing class, or use the Roofing Association of New Zealand's Find a Roofer directory, which lists its member companies. Whichever way you go, our guide to choosing a roofer still applies.
Roofers: want to be one of the first?
If you do good work and want jobs matched to the work you specialise in, read roofing leads in your area and how we check roofers, then apply to join.
Homeowners don't need to wait for profiles. Tell us the job, and we'll let you know whether a checked roofer covers your area.
