What does Windsor Grey look like?
Picture a grey that's nearly charcoal but stops short of black. Its LRV is 7%, darker than Grey Friars at 10%, so it holds its own against white trim, pale cladding and big areas of glass.
Low Gloss is the softer of COLORSTEEL's smooth finishes and reduces reflectivity, so the roof shows less shine in full sun than a Classic sheet would.
Why the finish matters with this colour
Because there's no Classic version, every Windsor Grey roof is Low Gloss. If you're adding to an existing roof or want the trims to match exactly, check what your roofer's supplier makes before you fall for it. NZ Steel says profile availability varies between rollformers.
Questions to ask your roofer about Windsor Grey
- Does your supplier roll the profile I want in Windsor Grey Low Gloss?
- Will the quote name COLORSTEEL, the product (MAXAM or ALTIMATE) and the colour?
- Which of NZ Steel's environmental categories is my house in, and what warranty comes with that?
- What colour will the spouting (gutters), fascia and flashings be?
- How will you cut the sheets, and how often will swarf (metal filings) be cleared off the roof?
Heat, coast and geothermal
With a TSR of 20%, most of the sun landing on a Windsor Grey roof is taken in as heat, so on an exposed, sunny site pair it with decent ceiling insulation.
It's available in MAXAM, which suits most New Zealand sites, and ALTIMATE, the marine-grade aluminium NZ Steel designs for breaking surf. Close to the sea or near geothermal activity, your roofer should confirm which one NZ Steel will warrant at your address.
If it were our house
If Grey Friars feels a little light and Ebony too stark, Windsor Grey is the middle path we'd look at. Get a sample, because no screen shows true colour, and stand it against your cladding outdoors. We're not affiliated with New Zealand Steel or the COLORSTEEL brand. When you've decided, we can pass your re-roof to one checked local roofer.
