COLORSTEEL colours

TidalDrift MatteA coastal name. The product still depends on your distance from the sea.

TidalDrift Matte is a smoky charcoal grey in COLORSTEEL's Matte finish, which NZ Steel says gives it a clean, contemporary character. Its TSR is 29%, a little higher than charcoals such as Grey Friars at 26%. It's made in Matte only.

We don't show this colour on screen because screens get it wrong. Ask a roofer or supplier for a sample sheet.

What does TidalDrift Matte look like?

Think of a grey with smoke through it: clearly dark, but lighter than FlaxPod Matte, with an LRV of 13%. The textured finish takes the shine off, so the roof reads as a calm block of colour. It suits crisp modern shapes, skillions and boxy extensions.

Where it sits among the matte colours

COLORSTEEL has three Matte colours. FlaxPod Matte is the darkest (TSR 20%, LRV 6%), TidalDrift Matte is in the middle (TSR 29%, LRV 13%), and StonePeak Matte is the light one (TSR 53%, LRV 48%). If you want a dark matte roof that stays a bit cooler, TidalDrift is the one of the two dark options to look at.

What to ask before you order TidalDrift Matte

  • Which of NZ Steel's environmental categories is my address in?
  • Is MAXAM right here, or should it be ALTIMATE?
  • If we are within 100 m of saltwater, has NZ Steel confirmed the warranty?
  • Can your supplier roll my profile in the Matte finish?
  • How will you protect the textured surface during the job, given scratches can't be touched up?

Near the water

The name says tide, but the product depends on distance. NZ Steel's Severe category takes in harbour foreshores and other large stretches of calm saltwater. Its Extremely Severe category, beside breaking surf, is where NZ Steel doesn't recommend MAXAM and ALTIMATE is the product.

Prevailing winds and local conditions can carry salt further inland than the distance alone suggests, so let the roofer confirm the category for your address. The same goes near geothermal activity, where NZ Steel wants to be asked before a product is chosen.

What we'd do

If you want a modern matte roof without going as dark as FlaxPod Matte, TidalDrift is the one we'd shortlist. Look at a sample in your own light first, because screens don't show true colour or texture. We're an independent referral service, not connected to New Zealand Steel, which owns the TidalDrift and COLORSTEEL names.
