What does Pioneer Red look like?
A true, warm red rather than a brown or burgundy. It reads as traditional: a red roof on a white villa, a farmhouse, or a shed out in the paddock.
NZ Steel only makes it in Classic. With an LRV of 12%, it looks fairly deep from a distance.
Character areas and district plans
Building consent is only one set of rules. Even building work that's exempt from consent must not breach the district plan, and some councils control how character homes look.
In Auckland's Special Character Areas, external alterations need resource consent, while restoration and repair is permitted. Ask the council how a colour change on your re-roof is treated, and note that Plan Change 120 may change those rules.
What to ask your roofer about a Pioneer Red re-roof
- Is my house in a character or heritage area that controls roof colour?
- Which COLORSTEEL category is my site in, and does that mean MAXAM or ALTIMATE?
- Will the written quote name COLORSTEEL, the product and Pioneer Red?
- Can I see a real sample outside before the order goes in? (NZ Steel says screens don't show its colours truly.)
- Will the flashings and spouting (gutters) match the roof or contrast with it?
- If the job is restricted building work, are you an LBP? (You can check an LBP yourself.)
Our call on Pioneer Red
For a villa, farmhouse or anything that wants to look like it's always been there, Pioneer Red is the honest choice. We'd sort the planning side first, then compare a sample against the weatherboards and trims in daylight. Just so you know, we're not affiliated with NZ Steel; we're a referral service that passes your job to one checked local roofer.
Want a roofer to take a look?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match it with a Find My Roofer certified roofer who specialises in that kind of work, and they call you to quote. Your number goes to them alone.
