What does Cloud look like, and how cool does it run?
NZ Steel describes a clean, versatile white, made in the Classic finish only. In strong sun a Cloud roof looks very white indeed.
TSR measures how much solar heat a colour sends back, so a bigger number means a cooler roof surface. Cloud's 69% sits at one end of the range and Ebony's 5% at the other. Against the other whites the gap is small: TuiTuft and Titania are both 66%, and NZ Steel's figures carry a 5% tolerance either way.
Using Cloud on walls, spouting and trims
If Cloud goes on cladding or accessories rather than the roof, read the warranty table. For MAXAM in a Mild environment, NZ Steel covers roofing for 50 years against perforation, wall cladding for 30, and accessories such as spouting (gutters), downpipes and fascia for 15.
Walls need more care too. NZ Steel asks for wall cladding to be washed by hand every year in Mild and Moderate areas, and more often nearer the sea.
Before you order Cloud
- A real sample, looked at outdoors. NZ Steel says screens show its colours differently from the product.
- Your site's COLORSTEEL category, from Mild to Extremely Severe, and whether that means MAXAM or ALTIMATE.
- Warranty confirmed with COLORSTEEL if the house is within 100 metres of salt water.
- In geothermal areas such as Rotorua, product and warranty checked with NZ Steel.
- A written quote naming COLORSTEEL, the product and Cloud, plus a copy of the warranty.
If it were our house
For a roof in full sun where heat is the main worry, Cloud is the colour we'd look at first, provided glare won't bother anyone looking down on it. On a dark modern build, we'd also try it as the trim colour. We're independent and not affiliated with New Zealand Steel.
